Zeta-Jones, 15, quits school and leaves home for London. “I remember growing up knowing I wanted to be on the stage,” she tells the Ottawa Sun in 2002. “I wanted to get to London as soon as possible and start auditioning for theater.” Zeta-Jones (pictured with her parents) adds to Harper’s Bazaar in 2000, “My life was my work. I was 15 going on 25. [My parents] didn’t want me turning around and pointing my finger saying, ‘if only you’d let me go, maybe this or maybe that would have happened’. I always knew I could go back. But I never went back.”

“It was never supposed to be on my album,” Pain said Tuesday in the MTV News office, wearing a purple top hat and matching shirt. “The record, it got leaked, then me and Kirk Franklin had to talk. He was doing most of the talking. He was saying it wasn’t no disrespect. He was saying he knows how songs get leaked. He had it happen to him before. He said he wasn’t a saint, and it wasn’t like he never did nothing wrong. It’s not like [Kirk] said I did something wrong. He said if I was gonna go with it, just change the melody. ‘You can still say silver and gold.’ He’s got a lot of people saying stuff to him: ‘How could you let T-Pain destroy a gospel song like that? How could let him talk about alcohol?’ I wasn’t even doing it for a mixtape or nothing. I was literally drinking and made a song. I was bored in the studio. There was nothing else to do. I made it into an alcoholic anthem, which wasn’t good.”

Beau Dozier artist: Up to this point, Beyoncé led the magazine to believe she wouldn’t be really opening up to them either: “Interviewing Beyoncé, who has admitted she dislikes the process, is a little like talking to your mother about sex. There may be a pretense of open communication, but the subtext is clear: Are you seriously going to ask me that? … For now, Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s relationship exists in that no-man’s land where they won’t give us anything and we can’t get enough.”

So at first, Essence settles for the usual discussion about her effort to maintain her privacy, which Beyoncé claims is so she can keep some mystery, stay sane and control her brand — though not necessarily in that order.

“I feel that, especially now, with the Internet and paparazzi and camera phones, it’s so difficult to maintain mystery,” she told the magazine. “And that’s so important. Even in a relationship, I feel like not being that accessible is really important. If you think about Prince or Michael Jackson, or any superstars, you couldn’t see them when they got off their planes or when they got out of the pool and didn’t comb their hair. It’s great that people see we’re not perfect. But it’s almost impossible to have superstars now, because people will never get enough. And it’s not even about my music. It’s about all the things that people imagine about me in their minds. But I can’t satisfy everyone. I know that Jay and I probably do inspire people. And I appreciate people feeling proud. But this is the only way I’ve been able to stay sane, so why would I start talking now?

“[Not speaking] controls your brand,” she continued. “It controls what you want to put out there and kind of forces people to talk about what you want them to talk about.”

The club she played, a relatively new venue called Le Poisson Rouge, was ideal for her current show, which is very straightforward. Some 600 people were arrayed at tables and up on risers around a circular stage in the middle of the room. The high-end lighting technology seemed to reflect the state of that particular art, and the sound system was that rare thing, a model of both bone-shivering power and absolute clarity. Since Li’s music includes some subtle details that might otherwise go missing, this was a perfect environment.

She gave the enthusiastic crowd pretty much what it expected off her album, including the overseas hits “I’m Good, I’m Gone” (also the first single here) and “Little Bit,” as well as such standout tracks as the dreamy “Dance, Dance, Dance” (a song which isn’t exactly what you might assume it to be). Every now and then she whacked a tambourine, smacked a cymbal and turned her boot heels into a very persuasive rhythm instrument. People were eating it up.

Halfway through the performance, she scanned the room and announced, “It’s all right to kiss at my shows.” Sweet. I doubt if anyone took her up on that, though. All eyes were, and who knows, may remain, on Lykke Li.
